Diodes introduces the AL8400 linear LED driver controller. It precisely adjusts various high-brightness LED currents through an external transistor. The controller is suitable for different types of LED strings in lighting, indicating or signage systems, operates directly from 2.2V to 18V, and can drive N-channel MOSFETs or NPN bipolar transistors.
The AL8400 's current sense voltage is very low, only 200mV. Compared to traditional solutions, the AL8400 not only reduces operating voltage overhead but also increases efficiency. Its open collector output can drive external conduction transistors to adjust the LED current from tens of mA to more than 1 amp.
The use of external turn-on transistors helps optimize power consumption and maximum drive efficiency. With a small number of external components, the AL8400 can drive longer LED strings with voltage requirements well above 18V.
The LED driver's low temperature drift and a 3% reference voltage of 25oC are superior to most linear solutions on the market today, and can also reduce bill of materials costs. The AL8400 linear controller is available in a small footprint, low-profile SOT353 package that offers far lower power dissipation than many other common packages, providing a low electromagnetic interference (EMI) solution.
