Texas Instruments (TI) today announced the availability of two new power management ICs (ICs) for point-of-load designs that offer an overall increase in size, power density, and performance standards. The TI TPS82671 and TPS84620 integrated power solutions not only greatly simplify the design of portable electronics, communications, and industrial applications, but also significantly accelerate time-to-market.
Sami Kiriaki, vice president of power management business at TI, points out: "The point-of-load design requires superior power density, high efficiency, and ease of use, and the two new power products deliver unprecedented levels of integration and performance. Industry's smallest 600mA solution
The TPS82671 is the industry's smallest integrated plug-in power solution with a tiny size of only 6.7 mm2, with currents up to 90 mA per square millimeter. The device is highly integrated with all external components in TI's new 1 mm high MicroSiP package, which significantly simplifies the design of 600mA portable electronics such as smartphones. The TPS82671 operates with a very low quiescent current of only 17uA and is capable of achieving over 90% power efficiency from an input voltage of 2.3V to 4.8V. The unique PWM frequency hopping not only reduces noise, but also greatly enhances the performance of RF-sensitive designs. Ultra high density load point
TI's new 6A, 14.5V TPS84620 delivers over 800W per cubic inch of power density with 95% efficiency and 30% better thermal performance than competing solutions in the industry. This integrated buck solution combines inductors and passive components in the same device and requires a minimum of three external components to achieve a complete solution in less than 200 mm2. The TPS82671 and TPS84620 are available now in volume quantities and can be ordered through TI and its authorized distributors. The TPS82671 is available in an 8-lead 2.3 mm x 2.9 mm x 1 mm MicroSiP BGA package; the TPS84620 is available in a 15 mm x 9 mm x 2.8 mm QFN package.
