SIA: Global semiconductor chip sales declined slightly in 2009

According to a report from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), in 2009, global semiconductor sales reached US$226.3 billion, down 9% from 2008's US$248.3 billion. This figure exceeded the expected $219.7 billion.

According to SIA, global chip sales reached $22.4 billion in December 2009, an increase of 29% compared to $17.4 billion in the same period last year. In November, chip sales were $22.7 billion, compared with a 1.2% decline in chip sales in December.

According to the SIA, China and India are two major emerging markets that will also drive market demand growth. In addition to purchasing consumer products such as mobile phones and computers, the two regions will continue to invest in wired and wireless infrastructure. The SIA said these investments in infrastructure construction will create demand for a range of semiconductor products.

SIA president George Scalise also said that for new products, such as netbooks and tablets, attractive prices are creating new market segments.
