Korea Introduces Strategy to Help Rapid Development of OLED Lighting Technology

On September 14, the number of patents for OLED technology held by Korean manufacturers exceeded the number of manufacturers in other regions of the world. In order to seize the future display market, the Korean Ministry of Knowledge Economy has listed the development of the OLED industry as an important development goal in its various development strategies.

According to reports, in the “Korean Green IT National Strategy” issued by the Korean Ministry of Knowledge Economy in January 2009, the Korean government stated that by 2011, research and development of OLED lighting core technologies will be completed; in 2012, the use of OLED lighting equipment will be promoted. Improve the use of electricity and reduce electricity consumption by 1/5. The government hopes to create an energy-saving and environmentally friendly next-generation lighting industry through the development of OLED technology and the integration of lighting and IT technologies to increase national competitiveness. It is planned that by 2027, 100% of lighting equipment will be replaced with OLED lighting equipment, energy consumption will be reduced by 15% (30 billion won in street lamps) compared to 2007, and greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 6%.

In 2010, on the 19th, the Korean government launched a new "Display Industry Trends and Solutions" to clarify that the OLED development goal is to become the first country in the world to achieve volume production of AM OLED display panels by 2013, leading the next-generation display market. The development; by 2015, Korea has basically entered the era of display; South Korea's domestic display equipment products and spare parts materials, the market share in South Korea expanded to 70% (current share of 50%).

In the "Display Industry Trends and Solutions," the Korean government has listed the OLED industry as a mid- to long-term development goal. The purpose is to enable South Korea to eventually become the world's first mass production country for AMOLED TVs and OLED lighting panels, and to ensure the competitiveness of core technologies in the next-generation display segments such as flexible displays and electronic printing.
