Amers Semiconductor Introduces 16-Channel LED Backlight Controller to Improve TV Picture Quality and Reduce Energy Consumption

China, December 16, 2015, Amys AG (SIX: AMS), the world's leading supplier of high-performance analog ICs and sensors, introduces the new 16-channel LED TV backlight controller AS3824, this control The device can realize the partial backlight adjustment function of the display screen, and the energy saving of the TV image is significantly improved by 20%-30%.

The new backlight controller is planned for the latest high definition (HD) and ultra high definition (UHD) TVs as well as high dynamic range (HDR) displays and displays. The AS3824's 16 channels each contain a fully flexible 12-bit pulse width modulator (PWM) to ensure that the display is partially backlight-independent, and each PWM generator can be synchronized to an external sync signal.

The 16-channel independent backlighting feature allows the backlight intensity of each selected area to be precisely controlled so that the picture content of each successive frame on the display is matched. When the area of a frame needs to be dimmed, the illumination of the LED in that area will dim the backlight independently of the other parts, thereby ensuring that the television can restore the real image even in the deepest black area, enhancing the viewing experience. In contrast, the traditional full backlight controller does not prevent some of the light from leaking into the black display area, causing the black areas to appear gray.

In addition, the AS3824's partial backlight performance enables additional system power savings compared to traditional full-range backlight controllers. The AS3824 backlight controller's precision internal 10-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) provides full-scale control of current accuracy (up to 5% of error) through external metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) or bipolar transistors. The backlight controller supports all LED backlight topologies with no restrictions on the current or voltage through the LEDs.

The device's 16 channels also feature a complementary 8-bit current-controlled digital-to-analog converter (DAC) that can be used to increase or decrease the local current strength of the LEDs in certain frames to enhance dynamic contrast, enabling the AS3824 to support HDR displays. And HDR TV.

The AS3824 also features a comprehensive set of protection support features, including thermal shutdown. When the temperature exceeds 140 °C, the LED short-circuit detection function will be turned on. The device can be programmed via a series of external interfaces and linked in daisy-chain to as many AS3824 devices as possible in the application.

"With the introduction of the AS3824, Amers Semiconductor will be the first LED backlight control to support the latest Dolby VisionTM digital technology standard for UHD displays," said Bernd Krafthoefer, Marketing Manager, Power Management Division, Amers Semiconductors. The semiconductor supplier of the device helps display manufacturers achieve vivid contrasts and reproduce the deepest black in the TV image."
