According to SEMI, LED manufacturers are ready to meet huge demand, and the LED industry has attracted a large amount of capital into the industry chain, from equipment, materials, extensions and packaging.
According to SEMI's release data, from the aspect of production capacity, the global LED chip production capacity will reach 4.35 million pieces per month (calculated by 2-inch epitaxial wafer, the same below). SEMI expects capacity to grow by 50% to 6.509 million units per month under strong LCD backlight demand.
Judging from the number of new LED manufacturing plants, the SEMI report pointed out that 19 new plants will be put into operation in 2010, there will be 27 in 2011 and 15 in 2012. According to the SEMI report, equipment investment in semiconductor manufacturing equipment for LEDs has rapidly increased from US$606 million in 2009 to US$1.78 billion in 2010. SEMI predicts that equipment investment will reach approximately US$2.5 billion in 2011, an increase of 40% from the previous year and will reach US$2.3 billion in 2012. However, SEMI pointed out that several of the 2011 investment plans may be delayed until 2012.
