Displaybank: Korea's semiconductor photoresist market reached 300 billion won in 2011

In 2011, the Korean Photoresist market for semiconductors was approximately 300 billion won. According to the “Korean Photoresist Industry Analysis” report issued by Displaybank, an investigation agency, the amount of photoresist used in the Korean semiconductor industry this year is approximately 250,000 to 300,000 gallons, and the output value is approximately 300 billion won.

Among them, the market share of KrF in photoresists used in Korea's domestic semiconductor industry is about 50%, and the total market share of ArF Immersion and ArF Dry is about 25%. Among them, ArF Immersion products with a high price of photoresist have annual sales of about 100 billion won.

The photoresist is sensitive to specific wavelengths of light and can transform physical properties for use in the photolithography of core materials made from exposure lithography. It is mainly used in semiconductors, LCDs, OLEDs and other display devices as well as LED and other industries. In particular, semiconductors and LCDs, which are mainly produced by exposure processes, are in great demand. It is very important to make exposure in semiconductor manufacturing. Therefore, the cost of photoresist as its core material accounts for a relatively large proportion, and its importance in technology and industry is also very high.

We are optimistic about the technical strength of the Korean memory semiconductor industry. Photoresist companies also attach great importance to the Korean market, including two South Korean manufacturers (Dongjin Chemical, Kumho Petrochemical), and five Japanese manufacturers (Sumitomo Chemical, TOK, Shin-Etsu, JSR, FFEM), and the acquisition of Dow Chemicals by Rohm and Haas. Among them, Sumitomo Chemical, TOK, Shin-Etsu JSR, and Dow Chemical competed in the KrF and above grades. The Korean manufacturer Kumho Petrochemical supplied a large number of ArF Dry products and some ArF Immersion products to Hynix Semiconductor. Although Dongjin Chemical has a relatively high supply of photoresists for LCDs, it still supplies KrF's lower grade products in the semiconductor field.

Displaybank pointed out that Samsung Electronics and Hynix in the field of memory semiconductors have expanded their gaps with Japanese and Taiwanese manufacturers in terms of technology, sales, profits, and market share. As a result, the Korean market has become an important market for the photoresist industry. . At the same time, the competition between various professional manufacturers in the photoresist market in Korea will also intensify in the future.

In addition, photoresists are used in industries such as displays and LEDs in addition to the semiconductor industry. Among them, the average annual usage of the LCD industry in 2010 has exceeded 8.7 million liters, accounting for the largest proportion of total use. However, the photo-resist used in the LCD industry is still a relatively low-cost product compared to the semiconductor industry. Therefore, only JSR and TOK supply specialty photoresists for LCDs, while other manufacturers supply LCDs. The willingness of photoresists is very weak, and the possibility of participation of new manufacturers due to industrial characteristics is minimal. Therefore, the market structure of three manufacturers (Dongjin Chemical, AZEM and TOK) will remain unoccupied in the future.
